Name of Character: Zauriel
First known Appearance: JLA # 6 (June 1997)
Zauriel is a DC Comics Universe’s fictional character that was created by John Dell, Howard Porter, Mark Millar, and Grant Morrison. He was introduced as a guardian angel and later becomes one of the superheroes of the Justice League.
When he first appeared in the issue ’JLA #6’ in 1997, he saved the life of Aquaman and from that time, he formed a friendly relationship with him.
The character of Zauriel was created as a temporary replacement of Hawkman who at that time was off-limits due to his character’s complicated continuity. Zauriel’s character was connected to Hawkman’s story by having him mistaken by Aquaman as Katar (Hawkman).
Zauriel is one of the Eagle Host of angels, who serve as Heaven’s hosts. Since the creation of the dawn, he has served The Presence as guardian angel, shielding the souls of numerous women including Joan of Arc, Mona Lisa, and Cleopatra. Several years ago, a woman who has a boyfriend, became his love interest. Also during that time, he found out about Asmodel’s hidden plans. Asmodel is the Bull Host’s King-Angel and a general of Heaven’s forces who wanted to succeed the throne of The Presence.
Trying to solve both his two problems, Zauriel filed his petition before the King-Angels, conveying his desire to resign as a guardian angel and go to earth to find his love. They rejected his perceptions and throw him spiralling toward Earth. This caught Justice League member Martian Manhunter’s attention. In essence, he gave Zauriel mortality.
Shortly after he reached earth, Zauriel discovered that some of the Bull Angels chased him, aiming to kill him as ordered by Asmodel. Zauriel told the Justice League about the angels. Along with the league, he battled with the angels.
Asmodel, together with his group of angelic chariot, followed down the Earth and made destructions in San Francisco. Along with The Flash, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern, Zauriel defeated the forces of Asmodel.
Impressed by his fighting spirit, the team invited him to be one of the Justice League members.
Zauriel’s story continued in the series entitled ‘JLA: Paradise Lost’. He searched for the woman he fell in love with. After finding her, he introduced himself to her and avowed his divine love for her. But before the woman could respond, Etrigan attacked him. He later discovered that Asmodel came back for vengeance.
Due to his misbehaviour, Asmodel was sentenced to go to Hell where he later met Neron, the demon-king, and combined powers with him. This resulted to the increase of Asmodel’s armies. Zauriel searched for Angel Michael and sought his help. Meanwhile, Asmodel attacked Justice League members and killed Martian Manhunter.
Nero and Asmodel headed their armies to the Heaven and defeated the forces of The Paradise. Aiming to get the throne of The Presence, Asmodel entered his room, but he found Zauriel instead. Asmodel ordered him to tell where The Presence was. According to Zauriel, He is everything and everywhere. Finally, Asmodel realised that he could not succeed in his plan, so he asked help from Neron. However, Neron abandoned him and later made him his prisoner in hell. Meanwhile, Martian Hunter went back to the Earth after The Flash restored his life.
After Zauriel's object of affection decided to remain with her long-time boyfriend, the Heaven appointed Zauriel as an ambassador to the Earth to become a source of reassurance and hope there. The Heaven gave him a Heavenly armour suit and his own headquarters in Los Angeles, which was called the Aerie. Later, Zauriel accepted the offer of Justice League and became a member of the team. He participated on numerous missions of the league.
Asmodel did not stay defeated for so long. Soon, he possessed the body of a powerful superhero named Spectre during the crossover in the ‘Day of Judgement’. Gaining immeasurable powers, Asmodel froze the Hell and went back to Earth to cause immense destruction. All heroes on Earth united and battled against Asmodel. Meanwhile, Zauriel went to the Purgatory to look for a soul suitable to replace the spirit of Asmodel inside the body of Spectre. Finally, they found the soul of Hal Jordan.
Together with the soul of Hal Jordan, they returned on Earth. Jordan entered Spectre’s body, which led to an internal conflict between him and Asmodel. At last, Asmodel came out of Spectre’s body.
In the #31 issue of the ‘JLA’ series, Zauriel confronted another version of Spectre and stopped him from killing Triumph, a previous superhero who turned villain.
His career with the Justice League continued until the arrival of the galactic threat called Mageddon
